Giuseppe Ansovino Cappelli

Giuseppe Ansovino Cappelli was born in Macerata, Italy, and currently resides in Rome. He is an artist, architect, and professor at the University of Rome. As both a painter and architect, he has primarily devoted himself to teaching and research—a multifaceted pursuit that began in the early 1980s. His work blends multiple disciplines, theoretical inquiry, and pedagogical practice, resulting in a prolific output of paintings and drawings executed in a variety of distinctive techniques. Central to his work is the interplay between rational structure and the element of chance. His creative process unfolds in phases, characterized by exploration, fragmentation, and experimentation, yet consistently unified by an underlying coherence shaped by the rhythms of life and experience.

Since the late 1970s, Cappelli has engaged with various phases of Italian artistic development, integrating his intellectual and creative research into his practice. He has published influential works such as Problems of Form and Before Rome · After Rome. His artistic language presents natural elements and totemic imagery in a minimalist aesthetic. This dynamic dialogue between abstraction and figuration underpins his entire body of work. From collage and pencil drawing to rhythmic incisions on wood, Cappelli’s techniques express a remarkable vitality. Themes of memory and symbolic reflection recur throughout his work, with what he calls a “rigorous fantasy” forming the spiritual core of his artistic vision.
